Cat5e - (TIA/E1568-A UTP cables)

UTP consists of 4 color coded pairs, each pair consists of a colored cable twisted around a striped cable. The pairs are as follows:

  1. Blue:Blue/White
  2. Orange:Orange/White
  3. Green:Green/White
  4. Brown:Brown/White

The fisrt step is to strip about an inch and a half of the sheath and untwist the pairs. Hold them together and bend them back and forth to straighten them. It's far easier to get them into the plug if all the pairs are straight and paralell.

Straight-through cable

Arrange the wires as follows, both ends are wired identically. Please follow the color arangement given here.

Pin 1:White/Green
Pin 2:Green
Pin 3:White/Orange
Pin 4:Blue
Pin 5:White/Blue
Pin 6:Orange
Pin 7:White/Brown
Pin 8:Brown

Cross-over cable

One end of the cable will be wired in the arranment listed above, as per a straight cable. The other end should be wired as follows:
Please follow the color arangement given here and label the cable as a cross over when finished to avoid aggravation if someone tries to use it as a straight through in an emergency.

Pin 1:White/Orange
Pin 2:Orange
Pin 3:White/Green
Pin 4:Blue
Pin 5:White/Blue
Pin 6:Green
Pin 7:White/Brown
Pin 8:Brown

Once you have the wires laid out correctly, snip the ends level with the cutters on the crimping tool, then slide the wires into the plug with the pins on the plug facing you. Make sure that the wires go all the way to the back of the connector, and that there is enough sheath inside the plug that it will be properly held when you crimp the plug.

RJ45 Pin layout

The pins on an RJ45 are numbered from the left with the pins on the plug facing you.
